Mykonos is not famous for cycling, which is precisely why the riding is good: before eight in the morning the back roads are empty, the light is soft and the meltemi has not yet woken up. A road or gravel bike turns the island into a different place entirely.
From the hotel, roll down to Platis Gialos and take the inland road towards Ano Mera — a steady, honest climb of about twenty minutes with the whole south coast unrolling behind you. Circle the monastery square while the bakery is pulling out the first trays, then descend towards Kalafatis and follow the eastern shore road back. Around 25 kilometres, one proper hill, endless sea.
Go early or do not go: by ten the roads belong to quad bikes and delivery trucks. Carry two bottles — there is no tap between Ano Mera and Kalafatis — and respect the wind forecast; a strong meltemi on the exposed east coast is a genuine workout. Lights and a helmet are non-negotiable.
The desk can arrange quality rental bikes delivered to the hotel the evening before, with pedals and saddle height sorted. Ride out at seven, and you will be back on the terrace before the breakfast buffet loses its pastries.
